Weston Super Mare L3

Weston Super Mare L3
Hutton Moor
15th-16th April

The meet was oversubscribed and so Weston have not been able to offer every swimmer all of the races they wanted.

Please check the list to see which races have been scratched – credit notes for these races will be available after the meet has taken place (when Weston will send us a refund).

For the 400m Freestyle and 400 IM races a “reserve” list has been created, so if there are any withdrawals from the accepted list the fastest swimmer from the reserve list will be offered the place.  These are shown on the attached list as “ALT”.  (Swimmers with SCR alongside their name for these races are not on the reserves list.)

Behaviour Policy Change

Wed 5 April 2017 at 2:04pm

Dear Parent / Carer

Recently concerns have been raised regarding some swimmers behaviour during land training sessions, including arriving late. Unfortunately poor behaviour can have a negative impact on the training of all the swimmers as well as being disrespectful for the coach running the sessions and, as such, cannot be, tolerated. As a result, the Committee have agreed to introduce a zero tolerance policy during land training sessions, which will mean that any poor behaviour during land training sessions will result in the swimmer being asked to leave the session immediately. This has been recorded in the minutes which are now published on the club's website - http://www.soundwellswim.org.uk/about/documents. Removed swimmers will be asked to remain in the centre until they are able to be collected, in line with club safeguarding policy.

We respectfully direct you to point 1 of the Swimmers Code of Conduct document in the "About" section of the Soundwell Swimming club website and ask that you remind your swimmer of this Code of Conduct and ensure their understanding of the no tolerance policy which will begin during Land training sessions from 3 April 2017. We apologise that this email is being sent out subsequent to this change being enforced.

Please be assured that we shall be reviewing this matter closely and on a regular basis.

If you do have any comments or concerns regarding this matter please do not hesitate to contact the Club Secretary, who will ensure that your concerns are escalated appropriately.

Kind regards

The Soundwell Swimming Club Committee

The meet was very popular, Gloucester have offered races to as many swimmers as possible, but some scratches were necessary.  As a level 2 meet, the fastest swimmers are given priority.  Where necessary, scratches were applied proportionate to entries across the age groups in each event (i.e. the slowest swimmers in each age group were scratched).  Scratches are marked "SCR", whilst confirmed entries are marked with provisional heat and lane numbers.  Please check the list carefully, and contact competition@soundwellswim.org.uk if you have any queries.

Soundwell Open Meet – Report

Sun 27 November 2016 at 10:11am

With yet another successful Soundwell open meet completed and under the clubs belt, everyone can now afford to take a minutes rest, until the planning for next years meet begins!!

We as a club would like to thank all the volunteers, parents, officials, visiting clubs, swimmers and pool side staff for helping to create this meet. The biggest thank you should go to Darren Stone for all the months of hard work and coordinating he has put into organising this event.

All of the soundwell swimmers produced great swims whilst attaining many county and regional qualification times. The PBs came in thick and fast at almost the same rate as the smiles and complements from the coaching team. With many of our youngest swimmers getting their first taste of competitive racing this weekend, I'm sure they have all caught the speed bug and will use this experience to develop and progress along a very successful swimming career with Soundwell.

We would also like to thank all the race sponsors that supported the club with this meet.

ASA SW Winter Meet Report

Mon 7 November 2016 at 10:11am

With five medals, twenty six PBs and four winter national qualifying times, the ASA SW regional short course meet was a huge success for Soundwell swimming club.  All who swam showed true class and form across the whole weekend.
The medals went to Jedd woodruff who came 2nd in the 100brs and 3rd in the 50brs, whilst achieving a national qualifying time and smashing his PB. Jack Placed 3rd in the 100 & 200bk achieving two national qualifying times. Jack also placed 3rd in the 400im missing his national qualifying time by under a second. Congratulations should also go out to Joel Williams also achieved a winter qualifying time in the 100im. A big well done should also go out to Anna Soteriou, who after only 10 weeks training just missed out on her national times for both the 50 and 100 fly and smashing nearly all her PBs.
Well done to Jack & Dan who became members of the 100% PB club.
All swimmers the swimmers have achieved a great deal of success over the last few weeks since the Gloucester open meet and showed that the hard work put into the training sessions will always show when racing. Yet again I find myself being very proud of what these young athletes have achieved.

Camp Reports

Wed 2 November 2016 at 9:11am

Coaches report from Cardiff:

Cardiff camp this year got off to a great start at Redpoint Bristol Climbing Centre. The swimmers enjoyed the morning so much they didn't realise how much their arms hurt... until they got to the pool. The weekend of swimming kicked off with the now famous Gloucester Blocks set, with the younger swimmers putting in the best performance. After an all you can eat buffet and an early night (for some) we were back at the pool for a testing IM set. Again the young swimmers outperformed the old, showing their determination throughout. After lunch the swimmers had some time to go through a goal setting exercise, with SMART short and long term goals discussed. There was also space for a "Dream Goal" which revealed some interesting aspirations. This included winning an Olympic gold medal, becoming a coach, and even just wanting to always enjoy swimming. Reading through these after was both inspiring and humbling. After the goal setting exercise came the physical exercise of zumba, an experience enjoyed by both swimmers and chaperones.

Finally the older swimmers got warmed up and had a chance to shine in the afternoon speed set. Lanes were reshuffled and everyone was pushing themselves, racing in waves against each other. Another well deserved all you can eat buffet followed, and the evening of bowling and arcade games proved it's better to be lucky than skilled (I'm not at all bitter about coming second). The next morning was arguably the hardest session, when swimmers were already tired they were confronted with the longest set of the weekend. However they rose to the challenge, with impressive swims all round. After lunch and a short relaxation session (where only a few of the swimmers fell asleep) it was time for the chaperones and coaches to get wet in the relay session. After some closely contested races (and one questionable decision on a race winner) lane 1 proved victorious, rounding off 3 days of hard work. An hour in the fun pool, getting slightly lost on the way to Toby Carvery, yet another large meal, and a short prize giving later saw the end of another Cardiff camp.

In summary, over 15km swam and over 10 tons of food eaten (may be a slight exaggeration there) made up the best swimming camp I've been on. I would just like to congratulate all of the swimmers on their performance, and thank the chaperones for their help and support over the weekend. Without you none of this could have happened.

Ashley

Coaches report from Spain

The camp began with an unfortunate delay at the airport due to bristols foggy weather. With a £3 meal ticket in hand all the swimmers took it in their stride and patiently waited, with the occasional 50 press ups for bottle flips.

With a short transfer from the airport to the hotel, it was check in, dinner and bed.  We were all awaken by a little ray of sunshine (Jasmine Stone) who got the unfortunate job of morning wake ups.

The leisure centre was just a short walk down the road. With a 50m pool, gym and studio, the facility was perfect for the hard work that laid ahead.

The first session was a test set to check the starting level of fitness, followed by a land session. The afternoon started with another land session which consisted of 30min run across the beach and up to a view point (lots of stairs) on the cliffs . The afternoon swim session was distance IM to swim out the tired legs.

Monday started with a PB+ session focusing on speed maintenance and efficiency. This led to a relaxation and core session of land training which was well needed by all. Unfortunately for the swimmers it was 80x100 in the afternoon with was both a mental and physical battle.

Tuesday was a day off from the pool but was substituted with two land sessions. The first was shuttle runs up and down the beach whilst another group swam out to the five knot marker and back. The second session consisted of another run (up stairs). This time the session was on the opposite side of the bay. These were no ordinary stairs with a very steep incline that led around  the back of the castle and up the cliff, each swimmer had to complete the set 10 times. Daniel 'the mountain goat' Ahmed came out on top after bouncing up every step.

Wednesday morning was a nice easy start into 10x400 threshold main set. Land training back down onto the beach. The day was finished off with a fly set back in the pool and what can only be described as one of the funniest talent contests of my life. Top award went to Josh but all performances were top class. Thursdays first training session was the repeat test set from the beginning of the week with the rest of the day spend down on the beach. The day was finished off with another pool session, dinner and presentations.

Top trainer boy - Jack Smith
Top trainer Girl- Ella Theobald
Most entertaining- Josh Keepin
Stupidest moment - Joel Williams
Most determined - Olivia Allen

The final day brought relays in the pool and a final land session down on the beach. The swimmers managed just over 47k, given the difficulty of the sessions both in and out of the pool all swimmers exceeded themselves.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the chaperones, coaches and swimmers for making this a trip to remember. I am very proud to be a coach of such a great club.

Jon Wills
