JOB DESCRIPTION - STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH (working with 

Soundwell Swimming Club Squads Aged 10 - 17)

Interview Date: TBC

Salary Scales: TBC Negotiable depending on experience.

Minimum Grade: Level 1 Gym instructor- Exercise to music - Circuit instructor. 

Hours of Work: Monday 18:00 – 19:00, Wednesday 17:00 – 19:00, Thursday 19:00 – 20:00.

Location: The normal place of work is the Kingswood Leisure Centre.

 

 

ROLE SUMMARY

This role will provide the delivery and development of strength and conditioning services for a wide range of youth swimmers competing at local galas through to National level and even Olympic trials. Sessions will need to run along side a periodised pool training programme. 

 

 

MAIN TASKS AND ACTIVITIES

Work with the swimming coaches to improve performance through developing, implementing and evaluating strength and conditioning programmes that reflect scientific principles as they relate to adaptation, periodisation, peaking, tapering and injury rehabilitation, whilst also incorporating the FUNdamentals of learning.

• You need to be passionate about developing young swimmers and motivating them to improve their strength, fitness and confidence

• enthusiasm, flexibility and patience;

• Work within the rules of professional confidentiality, liaise with athletes, primary care managers, parents, coaches and other support staff as appropriate within the rules of the ASA Code of Conduct, standards and guidelines

• motivational skills and an understanding of the psychology that underpins successful competition

• evaluating performance and providing suitable feedback, balancing criticism with positivity and motivation;

• assessing strengths and weaknesses in a participant's performance and identifying areas for further development;

• adapting to the needs and interests of group or individual participants;

• demonstrating an activity by breaking the task down into a sequence;

• encouraging participants to gain and develop skills, knowledge and techniques;

• ensuring that participants train and perform to a high standard of health and safety at all times;

• inspiring confidence and self-belief;

• developing knowledge and understanding of fitness, injury, sports psychology, nutrition and sports science;

• acting as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the people you work with;

Qualifications

Relevant degree and HND/foundation degree subjects include:

• health science;

• sport coaching;

• sports management;

• sports science.

 

 For this level of role we would expect the individual to have 1 years’ experience in strength training, although this does not preclude applicants without this from applying if they feel they have the necessary knowledge and skills.  It is important to SSC that candidates both have an interest in sport and recognise the importance of promoting and supporting equality and safeguarding within sport.
